Sometimes you just need to look away. Ever feel that way? You just need to look in a direction that you see no people, nothing human made, just nature? Psalm 121 begins with: “I turn my eyes to the hills. From where will my help come?” I think it is a common sentiment when confronted with the mess people can make of things to turn our eyes to the hills.
The nice thing about the sky, the hills, the mountains, the sea, is that we kind of know they will always be there. Whatever is happening in our lives right now will be temporary and we turn to look at eternity and get ourselves grounded again.
Turning our eyes to the hills reminds us that these problems won’t last forever and that one managing eternity on our behalf will always be there.
Let Us Pray: Father in Heaven, when I despair remind me of your vast eternity and your incredible forgiveness and love. Keep me from the trap of despair. In Your Holy Name, Amen.
