This weekend we will read about the Man Born Blind from JOHN. This story exposes how people so easily want some angle in which they can feel superior to others. “Who sinned, this man or his parents……” Who can we blame so that we can look down on them? We do this all the time. Studies show that we people watch a tragedy on the news that will observe what is happening and interpret the suffering from a moral lens and feel morally superior to the sufferers.
“They are suffering a hurricane because God hates Bourbon Street.”
“Wildfires! California is full of fruits and nuts anyway. Who cares?”
Those are quotes. The questions asked by the disciples are born from this interpreting suffering through a moral lens. Much like Job’s friends.
Jesus basically says this: Suffering is a great opportunity to show God’s love!
Let Us Pray: Father in Heaven, for Jesus’ sake help us respond with compassion and love whenever we see suffering. Save us from interpretation and self-righteousness and simply make us instruments of Your love. In Jesus’s Name, Amen.
