One of the interesting things about reading the Bible is that the Bible makes it very clear that faith and intelligence are not enemies of each other. The book of Proverbs makes it very clear that being a lazy thinker, a dullard, intentionally unaware, is not a faithful way to live. In other words, one of the callings of being a child of God is to be smart, wise. The creation story makes us quite aware that the human creature is different from all of the other creatures that God made and that is because of our vast intellect. And we are expected to use it. Using our brains, and being appreciative of the brains of others, is not an enemy of faith. Anything can become an idol including, our intellect, but we must also remember that our minds are a gift and God expects us to faithfully use them. Be smart could easily be a Christian mantra.
Let us pray: Creator God, You have made us in Your own image and You have given us the ability to create and imagine wonderful things, You have given us the ability to solve problems, You have given us the ability to innovate. Help us to embrace the gift of life and to live life with faithfulness and intelligence. In Jesus’s Holy Name, Amen.
