Tomorrow is Palm Sunday. Palm Sunday is when Jesus rode through Bethany and Bethpage on a young donkey and the crowd spontaneously proclaimed him king. Bethany and Bethpage mean house of the ill and the afflicted and house of unripe figs and they are squatter settlements where losers live. These people have no economic power, and they have no political power, but they have Jesus. Jesus has chosen to align himself with them. Jesus did not say much about politics at all but it is clear who he aligned himself with and that was with the people who suffer the most when powerful people fail. We must remind ourselves that Jesus was not killed by the faithful but was killed by religion and politics protecting their power in collusion.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, help us to recognize Jesus’s work and the hope, faith, and the blessing he brought to the people that the powers of the world try to ignore. Recognizing Jesus’s great work, help us to faithfully work for a just society. In Jesus’s Name, Amen.
