This is the Monday of Holy Week and as such we are confronted with Jesus’s actions after Palm Sunday. One of the things we have to try to come to terms with is Jesus going into the Temple on Monday and very aggressively kicking out the money changers and those who were selling animals to pilgrims for sacrifice. The pilgrims were being fleeced because they had to change their money so that there were no graven images inside the Temple and they had to pay for these animals to be sacrificed on their behalf and let’s just say that it was a good business. Why do good when you can do well? It is fair to say that Jesus tried to break down the barriers between God and us and certainly how the Temple was conducting its business had certainly created a barrier in people experiencing the grace and the goodness of God. Whatever the barrier is Jesus breaks it down. Whether it is poverty or illness or arrogance or wealth or idolatry or religion or sin or death Jesus breaks the barrier down. That is why Jesus came.
Let us pray: Father in Heaven, for Jesus’s sake help us to see clearly Your great love for us. Help us to see in creation, help us to see in Christ’s actions, and ultimately in the cross, Your great love for us. May Your love fill us with love that overflows for others. We pray this in Jesus’s Holy Name, Amen.
