April 1, 2026
Today is April Fool’s Day and it was named that because when the Romans changed the calendar to make January 1st New Year’s Day there were still some people in the Gallic and Celtic regions who still insisted on celebrating April 1st as the new year and of course on March 31st they did some of the silly things that we do on December 31st so that they were rather worthless on April 1st. Thus they were called April Fools. But it is worth contemplating whether or not we have become foolish. For ages the Church had a concept called the Seven Deadly Sins and they were deadly in that when we made room for them and they kinda rotted us from within, quietly but relentlessly. The Seven Deadly Sins are arrogance, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and sloth. None of these things are against the law. But if we are honest about it these characteristics are very dangerous to relationships, to society, and to the world when people who so blatantly embody them have power. It is important to remember that Christ came to defeat the shadow of death so that we would be better people.
Let us pray: Father in Heaven, we pray that we may be honest about life and the subtle ways we let you be replaced in our lives. Help us to be honest about all the idolatries that we let sneak into our lives, all of the things that we make acceptable by being quiet about them or by finding them amusing. Help us to live a life that is right. In Jesus’s Name, Amen.
